All the President's Men - TCM
- Probably the most famous journalism movie of all-time, this is the barometer by which every other journalism movie measures itself. Not only are Redford and Hoffman in their primes, but the pacing and material never feel old. A great historical rewatch for anyone who has at least a background in the Watergate investigation given that the movie doesn't give a lot of context since that isn't what the movie was about.
City Lights - HBO Max
- The first of three Chaplin movies listed on the AFI 100, this silent movie works best in its romantic scenes. Most of Chaplin's humor here is physical due to its silent nature, and I usually have a very difficult time with physical humor. However, the redeeming parts for me are in those observing moments where we see his true feelings and attraction to his blind love. It was a cute view into old historical cinema, but I think is grossly undeserving of being #11 on the list even before you start to talk about all of the movies that weren't on it.
When Harry Met Sally - HBO Max
- One of the great Rom-Coms of all-time and the kick-off to the 90s decade of Meg Ryan Rom-Coms. It is also one of my favorite rewatches as I've taken so many references from this movie from "men and women can't be friends" to "I'll have what she's having". One of the movies on my must-watch list for pop-cultural significance, and a still wonderfully funny and engaging movie.
The Americans (Eps. 5.1) - Amazon Prime
- We didn't get nearly as far as last week in this show, but we are still moving forward. The resolution of Season 4 is in books, and we are now getting to the arcs for Season 5. Paige's social life, Phillip and Elizabeth's new family, and the sudden necessary killing to end the episode. I'm late to this show, but I'm still as hooked as anyone.
My Weekly Shows:
Perry Mason (Ep. 1.2)
We dig further into Perry this week right off the back showing off both his military history as well as the amount of money HBO has by doing full re-creative scenes of WWI. We get an early reveal and go further into the case. Episode 2 is still pulling back the layers of this drama yet like Episode 1 did, but there will come a moment where the series will flip and we will be launched toward the ending. We also got the introduction of what feels like two very important characters in this episode in Officer Drake and Sister Alice. This also feels like a bingeable show and not a weekly; so, I am really wanting the next episode episode already.
